Why would anyone want to use iPhoto?
Digital Camera images
It's poorly
designed from the start. You can't simply open or
view a photo file.
I disagree
You must import it into a Library
first, which is unnecessary in Photoshop or most other
photo editiing software.
I believe this to be a lingo technicality. Importing it into a Library
is the term that describes getting the photo onto your hard drive with
"smart feature" turned on vs. the method you get a photo available for
Photoshop or any other photo editing program to simply open or view it.
The smart feature is organization.
iPhoto is NOT an editing program although it does have some basic
editing abilities: it rotates them, has a basic auto correction feature
and a poor red eye removal feature.
iPhoto is a library to keep your photos, think of it as keeping your
negatives from your 35mm days. From the library you can create
slideshows, buy photo albums, much like having prints made or using a
carousel projector. It features a quick and easy way to email photos to
anyone. You select small, med or large and whether it's going to
Windows or not and it eliminates the user needing to know how to
compress or convert, and keeps those 1280x960 pics out of my inbox.
I use Photoshop 4.0 and 5.5 and I'm not sure what you are implying by
this following comment
Photoshop does include a
separate browser that shows thumbnails of entire
folders full of photos, regardless of where they are
stored on the drive. Even has a navigation pane on
the side so you can easily work your way to the folder
you want.
iPhoto does this, except for the "regardless of where they are stored
on the drive". Are you saying that PS locates and groups all your
photos into folders, if you have been careless when/where saving them?
In MacOS X, if you put photos you've downloaded or received as
attachments in the appropriate user's Photo folder, iPhoto will show
them. It's the same learning curve as trying to get Windows users to
store their documents in "My Documents" folder instead of at the root
of C.
Photoshop is a complex photo editing program, is absolutely no
comparison to iPhoto.
JPEG viewer, Graphic converter, Adobe Photo Deluxe are no comparisons
either.
iPhoto is an organizer and a viewer. It is a database of images, you
can search, sort, copy and paste, drag and drop, add or delete. You can
export to an editing program, import from an attachment or a web site.
Any manipulation is done on copies, so the originals are left in the
library for the next time you want access to them. It also has it's own
cataloging system. Images are placed automatically in folders are which
are nested within folders for the year, the month and the day that the
images were added to the library. In addition, it has the equivalent of
recently viewed documents or items, showing your last roll of film,
your last 12 months of film, etc. for easier access. You can specify
additional categories such subject matter, titles, names of people in
the photos or whatever to add more search and sort capabilities.
Perhaps there is a similar photo viewer available
through versiontracker.com .
Possibly, I haven't found a need yet. iPhoto seems to be quite similar
to iTunes only it deals with images instead of sounds, or my first mac
application, Clarisworks, your basic wp, ss, draw and paint program. It
came with the operating system and it works, it's easy and makes it
difficult for you to destroy your data accidentally.
