After listening more closely, it sounds like it my be the hard drive.
Because when I shut down the iMac it souds like something spinning
down.  I reset the pram but when I tried to restart the computer,  the
Apple icon briefly shows and then a circle w/slash icon appears and
stays that way and does not boot up.
