My other question is how to enable it?

I am assuming from my reading that it is automatically enabled and all that
I have to do is uncheck Disable SMTP AUTH reporting and configure the
appropriate clients to use authentication.

yes, it's pretty much your only solution.

no, it's safe when taken as directed.

Consult your forum for any symptoms that persist. Not recommended for
pregnant men.

If you relay for addresses and have roamers, then SMTP AUTH is all
you've got to prevevnt unauhtorized relaying.  As you saw in this
list, it is troublesome for some people, but for others, most? it
works fine.  It really needs URGENT on-going attention by Ipswitch
since SMTP AUTH is so important.
