A debate about whether or not fascism is involved belongs in another forum,
but I think the question about whether or not administrators should read
other's mail without permission is separate from the question about whether
or not companies own their data systems.
Decent administrators do NOT read other people's mail for any reason. When
diagnosis requires that we interact directly with someone else's mailbox, we
get their permission. This doesn't mean that the company doesn't own the
data, it means that we do not own the data.
When management requires an investigation, the entire contents of the
mailbox are provided to the investigator. We are the clerks, not the cops.
By the way, if you don't encrypt your email, others can read it.
Engineers/technicians working on systems use sniffers. This is very similar
to telephone engineers/technicians who DO listen in on calls. The telephone
people are in serious trouble if they repeat what they've heard. I'm not
sure about the data side.
