To add a key piece to this: A double opt-in in will automatically default
to "unjoining." So when you receive the confirmation, you *must* reply to
it in order to be subscribed. That way, the recipient doesn't have to do
anything to get off the list if they weren't really the one who subscribed
to it.
The double opt-in refers to [1] Opting in by signing up on a web site (or
other location), and then [2] Confirming your address by replying to a
confirmation E-mail.
FYI, for IMail lists, our Declude Confirm offers true double opt-in. And,
I believe there is an addon in the works for IMail that has a replacement
for its listserver that also will handle this.

Actually, it isn't. Anyone with your E-mail address can send you E-mail
(with the key question being "Is it morally right to send unsolicited
E-mail to someone?"). That's a big question that can generate lots of
opinions, and likely isn't on-topic here.

Actually, it is. The question is whether or not it should be (and again,
this isn't the best place to discuss it one way or the other).

I agree with you. My own personal way of dealing with spam is using the
SpamCop and a couple other tests, and if E-mail fails several of them, I
move it to another folder. My settings are quite aggressive, so a fair
amount of legitimate mail gets caught, but I look at the "spam folder"
several times a day. I could, of course, have less aggressive settings and
only look at it once a week or so, but I prefer it this way (as I can't
remember the last time I saw a spam that didn't get filtered automatically).
