That sounds like RFC1123 5.2.5, that says that the mail server may verify 
that the HELO/EHLO text matches the reverse DNS entry for the mailserver, 
but that the mailserver must accept the message even if there is not a match.

However, that doesn't stop AOL from accepting the message and later 
silently deleting it, if it isn't happy with a missing reverse DNS entry.
