Weblogs just show me logging in, or trying to, that is when I realized that my web was down. Why would a dictionary attack cause web to crashwith 500K files in spool/, filesystem manipulations on that partition will take forever, causing various processes trying to use that partition to timeout
, it would be more efficient to do it via pop3... You would have to be doing post commands all day long.send mail with pop3? the msg would still have to pass into the spool/ swamp and get bogged down.
that's not very long. I've seen many weeks and even 3 or 4 months.
I guess it sounds like a game of who can hold their breath longer. But in the meantime, my server has been under attack for 2 weeks.
It is very hard to defend against a high-rate attack (hugh volumes in short period) with the machine itself. IMail will run out of SMTPD processes and all other incoming SMTP connections will be refused.
With IMGate, you can have several 100 SMTPD processes, and therefore a much better chance of outrunning the attack to keep some SMTPD processes always free for legit mail.
