It is very hard to defend against a high-rate attack (hugh volumes in short period) with the machine itself. IMail will run out of SMTPD processes and all other incoming SMTP connections will be refused.Actually, in this case, he doesn't have to worry (any more?) about the process limitation. Since no actual E-mails are being received (per the log file snippet he sent), no process limits will be reached (IMail doesn't start a new process for each E-mail until it needs to be delivered).
Of course, when he was running an open relay and getting those 500,000 E-mails in the spool, the process limit was an issue.
