Dan,

I have found that in most cases the box itself (and/or the OS) is more
likely to be down than just iMail all by itself. Those two situations would
both render the modem and notification software inoperable. I have never had
iMail crap out on me all by itself. It's always been a hardware failure or
the OS locking up entirely. Thus, I am still of the opinion that iMail's
monitoring service is of more use where you are monitoring access to an
outside network.
