That is correct, however Imail's monitor doesn't include the functionality to monitor whether a server is powered up, it is only designed to check whether services are running. So, for what the monitor is designed to do, a modem works great. It is meant to monitor whether the Imail services are running and whether other services necessary to Imail are running. I never meant to imply that this should take the place of enterprise-wide server monitoring. It is a good utility for what it does, though.
It has saved my rear axle a few times. A while back our SMTP service would drop out intermittently, and the monitor notified me via text message to my cell phone that it was happening. Turned out to be the MSSMTP service had somehow gotten enabled again and was conflicting, causing the imail smtp to shut down. In this case, our enterprise server monitoring application was only checking to see if port 25 responded, so it didn't do us any good. Imail was specifically monitoring SMTPD32, so it let us know when it got knocked out.
