We are having a problem sending mail to this server
220 ESMTP Sendmail 8.12.5/8.11.2; Tue, 06 Jan 2004 18:22:47 -0500

If a server answers with ESMTP should the accept EHLO?
When I telnet to the server and try a EHLO I get a 502 error

That just means the name of their server is "ESMTP". Since "ESMTP" isn't a fully qualified domain name, their configuration is actually not RFC-compliant.

It is OK for a mailserver to reject the EHLO, but only if it will accept a HELO.

When we try to send mail to them the server responds with a 500 Command
Unrecognized.

Could you post all the SMTP or SMTP- log file entries (the SMTPD entries are not needed) for this E-mail?
