OK. So the server determine ESMPT by trying the EHLO and if it fails it is
not supported. I get that now. I did not know how htat worked before.

It does accept the HELO after rejecting the EHLO

So after looking at the log files I realized the final delivery is by our
Symantec gateway not the imail server. We are only having problems wiht this
one server.

In this case, you would need to look at the log file entries for the Symantec gateway.


If they log each piece of the SMTP transaction, it should be easy to identify where the problem is. If they do not, you would probably need to resort to using a packet sniffer or looking at the logs of the remote mailserver.
