LDAP allows users of LDAP-enabled clients to: o Locate LDAP directory information that may include name, phone number, e-mail address, organization, department, and address. List all users at a site. o Browse for users who meet certain criteria. o Modify user information in the LDAP directory. o LDAP Administrators can use an LDAP enabled client to add, delete, and modify user accounts, including any LDAP directory information.
LDAP is not required to run IMail; you are not forced to use it. The only difference you'll see right now is the greyed out fields for the user data. We've never had this services on, and running it seems like it will just add headaches during upgrades because from what I've read on the list the LDAP init/conversion is very slow on large user databases. We have over 100,000 users in our database, and mysql is handling this just fine. Imail is working great for us without LDAP, why are we suddenly forced to start using it in 8.10? Is there some benefit to running LDAP? If we continue not using LDAP will Imail work properly except for the Admin fields being grayed out? Any chance this might be put back the way it was (LDAP not required)? Stephan. But, your best bet is to contact technical support so someone can talk you through the problem you are having. There is a command line utilty that can convert the LDAP database from old format to new. Support can give you further details on that, but it is not mandatory to run LDAP. Then after i read some more posts I changed the port of LDAP from 389 to 400 and LDAP started. Now the Imail Administrator works dead slow when i click on any user to see it's properties. At times it shows not responding. i tried to do the init of LDAP and its still dead slow. (unusable) Also my biggest question is, how do i go about updating a live server that has thousands of users? It is not currently running the LDAP service (stopped). Regards, Alexander Spiteri NextGen.net Ltd. In IMail 8.05 and earlier, IMail had access to this database even though the LDAP server wasn't running. In 8.1, IMail started using Open LDAP. IMail only has access to this data through the LDAP server, so if it's not running IMail can't get the data.
