It is indeed handy to perform remote-to-local and local-to-remote
archiving on non-mailbox servers. However, SEC archiving compliance
requires that local-to-local mail be archived as well. If the mailbox
server (as in most installations) is the first hit for local-to-local,
it must be involved.

IMail's copy-to feature enabled for local-to-local only, and
delivering to a mailbox on a non-mailbox server performing the other
archival duties, is an applicable hybrid solution.

Note that this only refers to the initial archiving process; dual
archives and remote, independent, search-optimized access to the
archives are often mandated as well.
