Maybe I'm just nostalgic for the old BBS days, but isn't it entirely possible that the existing list could be tied to a decent web based forum? I haven't gone looking recently, but it seems this kind of thing was around for quite a while and probably should still exist. Perhaps ipswitch can be persuaded to go this route... then those that want a list can have it, and those that want the message forum can have that. No need (I think) to split the community or force a choice.
