port the debian /etc/alternatives system to solaris and end this
discussion forever? :-)
No, not really.
The problem I see with not having a consistent environment, or having
a selectable one, is now the User will really be confused when a
program works under one environment and not another. While I admit
this will only affect command-line programs typically or those that
parse command-line program output, it is a concern.
One of the nice things about a GNU/Linux environment is that certain
reasonable assumptions can be made about how the utilities are going
to work, their output, etc.
The same can be said about a *Solaris environment, even though some
may not like how the utilities work, at least their options and output
are consistent and known.
If you make the environment selectable and completely invisible, all
reasonable chances of programs working go out the window.
While I realise that users could have always messed things up in this
way, this just makes it even easier to "muddle matters."
