What breaks in OpenOffice without Java?

oobase, for instance. But there're workarounds to avoid the installation of the jre, like gcj.

gcj? NO!!!!!! The last thing we want to do is take something from Linux that is not as good as what is currently in Solaris. Actually there are a few more things - http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Java_and_OpenOffice.org

Looking at it now the compress size of the jre is around 58MB for i386 and 70MB for i386+amd64. This is not that bad in the grand scheme of things.
