Perl is not cheap either.... Though as some Solaris services use perl it
could not be removed from the base.

Is Perl needed for an end user distribution? The few Perl scripts
could be ported to ksh93, saving 60M
A few things in ON depend on Perl like the SMF service
svc:/system/intrd:default,
the /usr/bin/kstat utility etc. It is essential. That is why Perl is
part of base ON.
However the usr/perl5 in the proto area of a opensolaris build is
much smaller.
Around 23MB. The extra stuff in usr/perl5 in Solaris Nevada is manpages
under usr/perl5/man and the presence of some additional software like
Net-SNMP
that add Perl modules. These extra stuff need not be in the base.
