Perl is not cheap either.... Though as some Solaris services use perl it
could not be removed from the base.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]> du -hs /usr/perl5
  60M /usr/perl5

Is Perl needed for an end user distribution? The few Perl scripts
could be ported to ksh93, saving 60M

A few things in ON depend on Perl like the SMF service svc:/system/intrd:default, the /usr/bin/kstat utility etc. It is essential. That is why Perl is part of base ON.

However the usr/perl5 in the proto area of a opensolaris build is much smaller.
Around 23MB. The extra stuff in usr/perl5 in Solaris Nevada is manpages
under usr/perl5/man and the presence of some additional software like Net-SNMP
that add Perl modules. These extra stuff need not be in the base.

Moinak.
