I think we discussed this issue when 0s0805 first came out. At that time, I
suggested that some high-up at ERI take a poll of all ERI employees to see
whether IM key should be enabled by default, and if yes, what should be the
most optimized triggering key. However, it went to deaf ears.

I use Chinese IM all the time (in en_US.UTF-8 locale), thus, logically, it
would be assumed that I would also support it to be enabled by default. But not
at all. Indeed, during that "debate", I was the only person supporting it. But
at the end, I voiced against it. The reasons are manifold.

One of the main reasons is that, unlike the better-behaving SCIM, IIIM takes a
noticeable time to load. Additionally, when IIIM is being loaded, an icon will
wobbly appear in the right lower corner of the GNOME screen, before it
disappears. This is very annoying to say the least. Many other Chinese users
have also voiced similar complaints about iiim.

I understand that IM is already enabled by default in the zh_ locales. For en_
locale users, I believe we should also respect their loud complaints (voiced
when IM was initially enabled by default for ALL locales).

Again, this issue was already discussed at a great length, and IIRC all the
English speakers voiced that IM should not be enabled by default at least in
the en_locales. I believe Fuyuki san made the best decision possible.

Ed.: There is another non-trivial factor that I had pointed out during the
previous discussion. Most of the US-keyboards that you find in the US have the
control-key at the left-bottom corner. OTOH, the same US-keyboards used in the
greater China area typically have the function-key to the left of the
control-key.

Thus, it is very easy for users of the first kind of keyboards (control key at
the left end) to accidentally trigger the IM, while it is almost never a
problem for users of the second kind of keyboards (control key not at the left
end).

OTOH Windows uses ctrl-space key to trigger IM. Thus, we will hear even louder
screaming of bloody murder (from many of my friends) if we change the trigger
key to something else.
