Matt, The examples I've studied -- in datasheets, and also in Microchip's C18 SPI library, all start with writing a zero to SSPCON. And you may need to adjust your clock frequency as well. So, I recommend you just call the init routine each time you want to talk to a different device. It may not be 'elegant', but you would agree that it will certainly work?
