Hi!
This is the only question I feel like able to answer: It's no problem via SPI.
If it is uncompressed audio, I2C can not even transmit 44.1 khz, mono, 8bit.

Alright... so I2C is too slow to be able to handle FLAC. That answers one question.

Are you going to use a hardware mp3 decoder?

Da... I'm planning on using a VS1053B. That chip can also handle FLAC with a software plugin.

I'm thinking about a player for uncompressed pcm, in that case the 16F887 would
be no fun, as it is probably too slow.

In my design... the only thing the PIC16F887 does is handle the PATA drives (plus activity lights and such).

It would send the mp3 data onto a PIC18F4450 which handles the VS1053B.

The PIC18F4450 will also handle 2 other PIC16F887 chips... one PIC16F887 will deal with 2 FM1236 MK3 TV/FM Tuners (only used for their FM radio tuners), and another PIC16F887 that will handle a LCD, IR receiver, interface buttons, and (possibly) a SD card.

Essentially the 18F chip is the "Brain"... and the 16F chips are the controller chips.

I figured I'd make the player design modular so that I can add, remove and/or upgrade functions/features as I see fit, without disrupting other functions/features.

Below is my poor attempt at an ASCII diagram that will (hopefully) explain it better than I can with words.

PATA Controller (16F) ----------------------- ---------------------------- Human Interface Controller (16F) \ / \ / \ /
                                                                   --------
                                                               Brain (18F)
                                                                       ||
                                                                VS1053B
                                                                   --------
