If it wasn't for the pressure of something like SWT. The folks at sun might not have responded as quickly as they did to improve performance in swing, etc. a little competition is good for all of us. I don't think SWT ever did damage to the community. it provided a performant GUI library when it looked like swing was not addressing the problem.
