I agree with the first part, that it's precisely what I mean when I say "People in the real world won't have their lives changed by closures / etc". > > As I compare the evolution of Java with the evolution of C#/.NET I'm > left with the feeling that the problem here is the open source/free > nature of the Java tools world. It's not a matter of open source. It's that innovation here happens in (at least) two ways: 1. Because people need it; that is, the innovation we're talking about is going to change / improve the way people from the real world work. In this case, there's a market (a ROI) and open source can play a role because it's just a way of filling the market needs. See e.g. how Spring revolutionized many JEE areas. 2. Because - open source or not - the corporate that pushes the technology has got resources to do things even when they don't seem to be needed by the market. It's what Sun did in the past, when they had gotten the money, and what Microsoft can still do since they have got still the money. While on the average I feel pretty positive about how Oracle will take charge of Java & surroundings, I don't think they will do again what Sun did in the past; in other world, things will improve with respect of the latest few years since Oracle has got the money, but they won't do a lot of things that haven't a foreseeable ROI. It's a chance the FLOSS community has to demonstrate how consistent is - or is not. -- Fabrizio Giudici - Java Architect, Project Manager Tidalwave s.a.s. - "We make Java work.
