You throw "they" around very loosely, I am certain Android attracts engineers over because it's open... follow official guys like Tim Bray or unofficial guys like Steve Kondik to see that effect. Nobody is claiming Google does not have financial motives. But at the end of the day, Android is still the platform that lets me read the source code if I am curious about how their JIT works or something (http:// android.git.kernel.org/?p=platform/dalvik.git;a=blob_plain;f=vm/ compiler/Frontend.c;hb=froyo-release), neither iOS nor Windows phone allows me that.
