I don't know jack about the clustering but if you do a CVS check-out, all the clustering code is under "cluster".
Also, search the dev mailing list on sourceforge for messages from Bill Burke and Sascha Labourey and you'll see some of the discussion regarding the implementation of clustering (I remember announcement messages, etc...).
