Here my two cents... Note that I only use the Jmol app, not the applet.

Q: Would we pick up more users if we did an official release? That is, are
there people who will not use the beta, but would start using an official
Jmol v10?
Yes. My personal approach is that I don't download betas unless they offer a new feature I absolutely must have or when I'm really keen on spotting and reporting bugs. However, I routinely get new official releases even if I'm not particularly interested in the changes.
Q: Jmol v10 does not support a number of things that were in Jmol v8. This
includes broader file type support, animations, vibrations, etc. Is the
absence of these things a *show stopper* for you?
Definitely. Animations and vibrations are a must for my daily work. Support for ADF and Gaussian files are highly welcome.
Q: What features do you believe are *missing* from Jmol v10b5 as it exists
today? (Please list your highest-priority item first)
1) Animations and vibrations 2) Import features: Gaussian, ADF
Q: What do *you* recommend?
Jmol v10 should not be officially released until it has the features back in that were in v8. I don't think people could understand why a jump by 2 major version numbers gets them less than they had before.
Having a downsized feature set is OK for a beta, although a bit unusual. (These things are normally tagged alpha in my experience.)
Q: Any other comments?
Jmol is and remains a great program!

Hans Martin
