I am using a line such as x = file("?");load @x; to load a file from a local
directory (OS X Mavericks)

With versions of Jmol 14.0.1 or earlier, this retrieves the file from eg

reading isosurface data from file:/Users/hrzepa/Documents/*cub/18_mo50.cub
FileManager opening 1 file:/Users/hrzepa/Documents/*cub/18_mo50.cub

Moving up to the latest Java 14.2.4_2014.08.03 and with identical script
(using Google Chrome 64-bit or Safari or FireFox), I get

Unrecognised file format for file
http://www.ch.ic.ac.uk/rzepa/cub2jvxl3/#NOCARTOONS#;file:///Users/hrzepa/Documents/*cub/18_mo50.cub”

I guess the file path handling has changed? And “///“ ? Is this just a bug,
or a change in the way file paths are now handled?

You can try it for yourself at http://www.ch.ic.ac.uk/rzepa/cub2jvxl3/
