Good point, Mike, and the truth is that we CAN enjoy these things on a purely surface level. I think one has to determine if the artist intended it to have some kind of meaning, and progress from there. With Lynch, I think he just creates a pallette of images sometimes with no intention of coherent meaning. Just to stir the pot. Joni, meanwhile, is not the type to create something without some kind of meaning, so there's a much greater temptation to figure out what "your notches" etc. means.
