Kate was up at dawn in the day of the sampler. Check out the title song to her 1982 album The Dreaming, which contains the earliest use I know of of that orchestral "stab" that was simply EVERYWHERE for some time afterwards. That song also contains strong aboriginal influences, way before "world music" was in vogue, not to mention Rolf Harris on didgeridu. By the time Joni got to it, it was well established, I'd say.
