Catherine, I enjoyed your thoughts on Amelia and agree that a scholarly dissemination of Joni's lyrics would sort of kill the spirit. That's just a personal opinion - I'm sure many would be able to read a scholarly analysis of one of Joni's songs and not find that it takes away from the song itself, but I would. I enjoy art criticism to a point but if it gets too heady it really drives me crazy, because I think so much of art is about emotion, intuition and psychology that to cut it all up into logical fragments is an exercise in futility and actually undermines the creativity of the piece in question, though not by intent. I'm sure the intent of such analysis is to prove how genius something is or how worthy it is of inspection, but the art lover can decide that on their own, I think. I'm not saying it shouldn't be done, I'm just saying I wouldn't be interested in reading it.
