The boot image uses less than 1GB, but /var mounts on the HDD which is where most of the space will be used for the items I mentioned above. You could do 8GB, but limit the amount and size of the trace files. You could script a box to SCP those trace files to a central server and then do a periodic cleanup of the logs. Also, syslog to a remote server.
