The traditional view is that a firewall is so important to the 
network, you cannot have it screw up.  Making it do more things 
at once is inviting it to screw up in unpredictable ways.  Many 
experts have spoken against the new all-in-one security appliances 
for this reason.

There is also the idea that the firewall is the part of your
network that is constantly being attacked from the outside,
so it is best to limit how much of your internal data even
passes through any part of it, despite whatever settings you may use.

You decide where your comfort level is with security.  To avoid
liability, a corporate firewall may have to follow more paranoid
security policies than your own comfort level.

If available network addresses and your budget permit it,
you can always just get a printer with an internal JetDirect
or use a small external USB JetDirect.
