Its often the case that the "published" sale figure for a player no where reflects the cash received by a club in the first instance, there are quite often staged payments, appearance payments and of course the sell on payment.
Having said that the million pound or so from the cup run would easily have secured a higher standard of loanee and on fairly secure terms (ie until the end of the season) as clubs with nothing to lose or gain will willingly off load players as loanees to ensure that someone else pays their wages bill.
Ita all about management and experience balanced with your standing amongst the rest of the football world. Like it or not the majority of the professional clubs hate Bates as he has had a big part to play in ensurinf that HMRC etc.. now look at every move every dodgy club makes.
