Perhaps, i was thinking one tapered bearing and one strait bearing each end of the headstock

The problem is they don't take thrust loads. We don't generate high loads really in any direction, but what if we took a bronze flanged bushing and installed a needle bearing in it. Now we can use shaft collars that ride against the flanges of the bronze. We have just created a super thin thrust needle bearing. Six is not quite enough dia were 8 would cover most of what you would turn. spacers that fit the back of each that also fit the rails with longer bolts to the table nuts would do it. The answer is not without drilling new holes and making an adapter to fill the larger hole in the tailstock. The headstock and all the rest of the hardware can be swapped end for end.
