it does Bill ----- Original Message ----- From: Tim Krause To: legacy-ornamental-mills@googlegroups.com Sent: Tuesday, August 26, 2014 8:24 AM Subject: Re: Revo Owners
Like all the rest of the legacy machines, there is very little room to mount a bearing. The Revo is no different. The more I look at it, the less possible it becomes. I've never seen a thin section imperial sized bearing. Most roller bearings for a 5/8" or 3/4" shaft have a 1-5/8" OD. Those have to be mounted some way. Legacy made a custom mount for the CSB-202 style bearings but smaller shaft bearing in the similar range are too big. Even my idea of a needle bearing stuffed inside a thrust bearing needs a mount. That adds up to almost 1-1/2" in diameter. Today I'm wondering why not use the lowly bronze bushing? These have been inside of motor for a century. They do wear out, but they are easily replaced. I hope this helps a bit without me drawing a bunch of circles. -Tim ----- Original Message ----- From: Bill Bulkeley To: legacy-ornamental-mills@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, August 25, 2014 3:12 PM Subject: RE: Revo Owners Perhaps, i was thinking one tapered bearing and one strait bearing each end of the headstock With a bearing housing that bolts to a face rather than at right angles like most bearings do I haven’t looked what’s around it was just in my head Can you post a sketch of your idea to show what you’re thinking of Bill From: legacy-ornamental-mills@googlegroups.com [mailto:legacy-ornamental-mills@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Tim Krause Sent: Monday, 25 August 2014 8:31 PM To: legacy-ornamental-mills@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Revo Owners This idea is way off the normal path, but curt once mentioned the idea of needle bearings. The problem is they don't take thrust loads. We don't generate high loads really in any direction, but what if we took a bronze flanged bushing and installed a needle bearing in it. Now we can use shaft collars that ride against the flanges of the bronze. We have just created a super thin thrust needle bearing. This is 3:30 am thinking so I'd definitely like to hear thoughts on this one. -Tim ----- Original Message ----- From: Bill Bulkeley To: legacy-ornamental-mills@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, August 25, 2014 2:28 AM Subject: RE: Revo Owners No to both questions if you check your revo you should see the travel will go past centre And I want ball bearings in the headstock for using with drive motors, one on the headstock and one on the leadscrew like my larger mill has or will have again Bill From: legacy-ornamental-mills@googlegroups.com [mailto:legacy-ornamental-mills@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Tim Krause Sent: Monday, 25 August 2014 7:14 PM To: legacy-ornamental-mills@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Revo Owners If I relocate the holes, do I need to find 1" of extra travel on the y-axis? Have you really worn out your bushing on the spindle? I might have an idea on a suitable bearing. -Tim ----- Original Message ----- From: Bill Bulkeley To: legacy-ornamental-mills@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, August 25, 2014 1:48 AM Subject: RE: Revo Owners Only move the both out 1inch more so the revo will be able to turn 8inch dia instead of just 6. Six is not quite enough dia were 8 would cover most of what you would turn. spacers that fit the back of each that also fit the rails with longer bolts to the table nuts would do it. And defiantly ball bearings in the headstock a slip on live centre like I made once would take care of the tail stock end. The answer is not without drilling new holes and making an adapter to fill the larger hole in the tailstock. The headstock and all the rest of the hardware can be swapped end for end. I will be considering making a reversed tailstock for myself. Any thoughts? -Tim No virus found in this message.
