The solution has already been given in this thread.
Put the actual relationship in double square brackets.
If you like the [--?--]
enter it as
[--?--] [[wife of Joe Blow]]
etc
I don't like the [--?--] so just put the relevant information in the double square brackets like the original poster.

Considering the many helpful suggestions on this topic and this recommendation, I decided to use this format. I have just changed my 129 individuals. I prefer to see a question mark to reading what looks like a "real" name. The Index View does put all the [--?--] at the top of the alphabetical list - they have to go somewhere
and at the top is better than mixed with the "known" surnames.

However ... I did just discover a "problem" with its use. Exactly the one I was trying to avoid in the first place. Legacy considers these all to be possible duplicates, so I have to (once again as I had to do when they were all "Unknown") mark all combinations as "Not Duplicates." All 318 of them - one at a time - with at least three mouse clicks per each pair. It will be a long night till I get this cleaned up. And every additional [--?--] I add in the future will make a possible duplicate with all the existing ones. A lot of mostly useless work. Is there any way to avoid this? I know these are different individuals, but I have to tell the s/w
explicitly for every combo. Suggestions anyone? (Having their real names is
the obvious, but in some cases it may be impossible to every discover.)

Is there a generally accepted standard for designating an individual

RootsWeb recommends using the 7 characters [--?--]

I use this in Legacy, other genealogy software and on my web pages
and haven't had any problems with its use.
