Thanks for this article, Cathy. Very interesting reading, and I note
they indicate that 10 minutes may not be sufficient time for all memory
to be cleared.
If you are having problems with your computer where a reboot may be
indicated but does not have the desired effect, it may be worth your
while powering down and leaving the machine for a while - go and make a
cup of tea or something, then come back.
I have had to do this with my computer in the past, and I've also had to
leave our hard-disk recorder unplugged for ages to get it to reset
itself when it gets into a "tizzy". A few minutes were not enough to
clear everything.
Bob - are you still having these problems that you reported which
started this thread of discussion?
Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard

It's not the hard drive you are waiting for but for the power to drain
out of all the circuits. That takes at least 30 seconds if not longer.
There was a news article this week about the possibility of even
breaking encryption because of this fact that it takes time for power
to be lost and therefore for the RAM to be clear.

Given the laptops lost or stolen in Britain recently that contain
sensitive information, this is an issue - but probably not for any of
our data ;-)

A full power down is often helpful, but I don't believe it is
necessary to wait 5 minutes. Once the hard drive has spun down
completely you can power on again. That is probably less than 30
seconds. And I don't know if that is even necessary with modern hard
drives since there is not that wait when you do a reset or a warm reboot

Hi Bob,
Did you try rebooting your computer? And if that didn't work, did
you shut it down and leave it off for five minutes or so before
starting it up again?
Sometimes things get a little confused, and this helps to reset the
memory and stuff.
