Well, OK. Our federal government identifies you with your social security
number, but I will continue to address you by name. And, as you perhaps can
imagine, I have numerous William Thompson(s) in my database, but I don't
have a clue what any of their numbers are, including the progenitor. He is
the William married to Sarah Patterson. It's not particularly difficult to
distinguish him from any of the others, nor the others from him and each
other, by the same method. And, since I need to know his name anyway, it's a
heck of a lot easier than remembering both his name and his number.
Sometimes I don't remember/recall people who marry into the line, but I
wouldn't be remembering those people's numbers anyway.

The easiest way for the database to be certain this is a unique record is
to assign it a number. Why Legacy tells you these numbers is a mystery to
me.
Because many users like to have a unique identifier for each record and
Legacy in their wisdom decided to give us not only the opportunity to
access the RINs but also to use UserIDs.
(FTM, at least in the versions with which I am acquainted, makes it a PITA
to discover their equivalent of RINs, which is one of the many reasons why
I consider Legacy to be the superior product.)
