If you've already numbered your paper, I would suggest renumbering your MRIN's to match. If that's possible. It would, of course, have to be done one at a time. How/why were you numbering your paper before you had it synced with database numbering, or was it something other than Legacy?

Thank you Bruce. You are correct about the MRIN, my mistake! That is the
method I use after finding Geoff Rasmussen's recommendations
(http://www.fileyourpapers.com/legacy/legacy.html). I started using this
method before ever using Legacy itself. I have been following your posts
about renumbering RINs and wonder, does that same apply for the MRIN? Since
I use that method, will the MRIN renumber as well and throw my paper filing
out of kilter?

I think you want to file by MRIN rather than by RIN. This is one of
the methods used by many (including myself) of filing and there is a
description of it on the Legacy Home page (somewhere).

Thank you for the reply Cathy! I wondered if the RIN numbers were used for
something else, I know you can search by them in the lists. Would you
suggest following the filing system for my paper records using the RIN
numbers? By entering each family together they would then be grouped
together in the paper records. However if you renumber the RINs then the
paper records would not match. While putting records with each family
creates duplicates, I like being able to view them together.

Hi Cheryl,

You enter people in any order that suits you and the sources you are
using.
For example, if I have a sketched family tree from a relative, I
start at the top if it's a drop down chart and enter everyone I don't
have and extra details or source for those I do have. Then I pick up
the next piece of paper and enter whatever is on that.

The RIN is simply a computer generated number so that the computer
can find all the information that you enter for a particular person
and put it together on the screen and in reports etc. They are
assigned in numerical order as you enter new people. If you delete
people from time to time, you can ask that this now empty RIN be
filled with the next new people or leave them empty. That's an option
you set in Options > Customise.

The RINs in your old family file simply show that your husband's
family was entered first. The RIN is not a value judgement or an
indication that some people are more important than others. The most
important people in my file at the moment are RINs 1852 and 10350 -
two of my ggggrandparents who I hope to find out more about when I'm
in England or at least see where they lived.

I have been a use of Legacy since v5 and have been a "lurker" on the
board for about a year. I would like to ask advice from all you
wonderful experts out there.

Is there a specific order for entering generations and/or
siblings? With the new Source Writer, I have found I did not do too
terribly entering the information by myself, however, I am reviewing
an old file and manually entering the information into the new
format. This has given me the opportunity to find missing
information, sources and errors. I wonder though that looking at the
RIN numbers in the old file they are very low on my husband's family
and much higher on my family. Yes, I have 1 file with both sides.
With all the information at my fingertips, I hope this is the last
time I have to start from scratch if I do it right this time!

Thank you all for the wonderful help and advice both on the program
and research. I have learned so much!
