Graham and Brian,
What do you mean by update? New names added or a change in text
notes?? When you are in Treedraw, you "Import" the data from Legacy.
I only add a few names at a time - just easier for me to deal with it
all as I have many intermarriages happening - so if you change the data
on a person that will be imported the next time you open Treedraw. For
example:
Lars Pedersen
bn. 1109 in Norway
d. 1149 in Denmark
(under options you can choose whatever abbreviations etc you want to us
for born etc. and say Nor for Norway)
After finding out that Lars was murdered by Ollie Johannessen, I add
this to the Death Cause in Legacy, Treedraw will pick that up and you
will have:
Lars Pedersen
bn 1109 in Norway
d. 1149 in Denmark
Murdered by Ollie Johannessen
Your chart would have to be adjusted in this case. If you add a new
person, you would "Import" that person to the proper place on your chart.
If you want you can put your notes on the chart as well. You do have a
lot of choices under the option section and preferences.
Both my husband and I have our family tree charts in Treedraw
(separately). My family is from Norway, his from England. We can have
our own abbreviations for our own trees ( ie Eng for England) without
interfering with each other's family chart.
Hope this helps you out.

These two responses made me think a bit! Exactly how are people
adjusting
the output? I can see how the original input can be configured
slightly but
unless I'm missing something that is it set forever. I also have a
related
formatting question - although you can update text quite easily has
anyone
figured out a way to bring in new additions to the tree? It is not too
difficult if it is an entire branch but if they are scattered
throughout the
tree it seems you need to remember each addition (I had initially
hoped that
the whole point of the linked database was that it picked up changes
to the
data but alas not).

According to the Treedraw description on the web site the data in
Treedraw is linked to the Legacy file it came from and can be updated.
Here is a quote:
" Treedraw Legacy maintains a link between each chart text element and
the source field in the original Legacy family file. This means that
you can update each text element automatically to mirror any changes
in the original data. The tree link for each text element can also be
modified manually. This is a powerful feature which gives you control
over the content and format of the text in the chart."
Maybe you should check the Treedraw settings, options or preferences
(I don't know what Treedraw calls them) to see if there is one to
automatically refresh data that you may not have turned on. If that
does not exist, check the menus for an update now option to get
Treedraw to query the legacy file and get the new text.
If you do not find one or the other please report back because it
would be a BIG argument against getting Treedraw. I don't want to have
to recreate the trees from scratch every time I make a change to
Legacy. That would be a big headache if I do a lot of customization of
the layout by staggering branches of the family to condense the layout
or by adding colours to lines etc.
