Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Photo storage (Was: Sharing Multimedia Files....)

Hmmm, it seems that the section on file naming was removed. Sorry.

Web servers don't like spaces in file names. They're replaced by an %20 (and sometimes other symbols). If the picture is linked as "bill smith.jpg" and
it's changed to bill%20smith.jpg when uploaded, then it won't be found by
the link in the web page.

If you want to separate "bill" and "smith", add an underscore or hyphen.
Don't rely on capital letters for the distinction because those could be
converted to lower case.

So the best thing is to not include spaces in picture file names especially.
We did have a problem with spaces in the path, but I believe that's been
taken care of. Personally, I have my pictures in many sub-folders under
c:\MyPictures, and none of the folder names have spaces.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Sherry,

Thanks for the clarification. The caution is really for users who plan on creating web pages, and not for Legacy users in general. And it isn't really about pictures in particular either, but about the names of any files & folders that you may want to copy (with the same names) to a (Unix) web server. And there's no problem with using "My Documents" or "My Pictures" as part of the Legacy path to your data or pictures, but you should put all your data to be transferred in subfolders & files whose names use underscores instead of spaces. That's what I thought.
