Hi Kirstin,
Basically because should you wish to create web pages some (many) servers do
not recognise spaces and your pictures etc will not appear on the page.

Why should we not put spaces in folder names? I followed the link &
couldn't find it. Also, the article tells us to edit the paths in the
Master path list by hitting the edit button. I could not find an edit
button.
