Eeek.. I don't like the idea of anything changing my file names, I may have
something else linking
to those files.

I have to agree with Sherry, although I would suggest that avoiding spaces in
file names makes
them portable rather than standard. You don't know what/who may be referring to
them in the
future.

You can never be sure when spaces in file names might trip you up. I recently
came across backup
program which was run every night (this was a Perl program running in windows
program!!). When a
disc crash happened, they suddenly realised that the backup program missed all
files with spaces
in their names.... that was a VERY expensive mistake.

It a matter of personal opinion, that a file, being a single item should have a
name which is a
word, rather than a sentence.

May I suggest using capitalisation in file names for example:-
georgeSmithAged5.jpg

"George Smith aged 5.jpg" looks like a list of four files to me
"George_Smith_aged_5.jpg" is a possible compromise, but still looks a little
disjoint

For those with thousands of existing files, I wouldn't worry about fixing them
until you find a
real problem. But I recommend naming new files with no spaces just to minimise
the risk of any
hassle in the future.

Personally, I blame Microsoft for allowing spaces in file names in the first
place... not that
have any particular reason to allow users to name files in such a way that they
confuse programs
made by their competitors <vbg>.

Hope that helps
Chris
