I think this would be an excellent area for improvement (he says at risk of hearing cries of "fix all the current bugs first" <vbg> )
I made the following suggestion a few weeks ago, but for some reason, it didn't have "[LegacyUG]" added to the header, so I wondered if that may have confused some e-mail filters. Hence, I've copied my suggestion below. I believe that this suggestion is very closely associated with the idea of Surname notes. I had one interesting reply, which suggested sorting locations right-to-left and then tagging all associated individuals, but that still required a significant amount post-processing. By the way, I have not yet had time to make any progress on generating the report myself from the GEDCOM. I'm inclined to agree with Dennis.. it's probably a candidate for a v7 improvement. Hope that helps -------------------------------------------------------------- Many family history societies are based on particular geographic regions, I would like to extract a list of surnames associated with particular regions, along with the the range of dates in decades. This list could then be circulated within the society. In an ideal world, every address would be linked it to one or more regions. Legacy could derive a list of people associated with each region and produce a list. Perhaps something along the lines of:- Region: Nottinghamshire, UK SQUIRES (1820-1930) 24 people THRAVES (1780-1850) 18 people Region Debyshire, UK SAXTON (1820-1920) 17 people If more that one region may be associated with a particular address, you could have villages or towns. For example. Region: Nottingham, UK SQUIRES (1920-1980) 45 people Region: Cropwell Bishop, Nottinghamshire UK SQUIRES (1850-1930) 21 people THRAVES (1840-1850) 3 people I appreciate that what I'm suggesting isn't easy, but it would be extremely useful! Has anybody else done anything along these lines? or perhaps has some strategy in mind to extract this sort of information. At the moment, the only idea I have is to use Perl to do an analysis of an exported GEDCOM file. But even that will take me at least a couple of uninterrupted days to do (probably 2-3 weeks in reality). http://www.squiresfamily.me.uk/famhist Regards Chris Enter the drawing for a FREE Legacy Cruise to Alaska or a FREE research trip to Salt Lake's Family History Library.
