Oh! Boy! This is a great tpoic although I am not sure it is vital to LEGACY, before I began working on my family tree, I thought that my Van Scoy surname was German then when I found outthat itt was Dutch I became more interested in my ancestry than ever, so it is possible that such knowledge would help in pointing a location to do research. And I have another surname story that illustrates that very point. My Minor line supposedly was Dutch also but it sounds English. It seems that a man named Mienhert Doodas came to america and wanted to become more American so he named a son Doodes Minor in Holland Minor means like Junior does here so then he was Doodas Major but the Doodes Minor became the beginning of my Minor lines. I think that being able to add SURNAME information is a really marvelous idea. I will get it no matter what version has it.

We've logged the request in our
Enhancements project to do "something" to accommodate for the
history/origin/etc. of surnames. Like Dennis later mentioned, what all
we would do with it, I don't know yet. I, too, am interested in learning
from others what they would forsee with this. Regardless, I think it
would be interesting to be able to track this kind of information about
surnames.

I envision this as more of a V7 feature. ;-)

Of course, attaching a note to a surname like "Smith" might not work
out. You might have many Smith families in your database that have
absolutely nothing to do with each other. But a surname like mine would
be a different story. ;-)

Maybe I'll take back what I said about the Surname Report ... with a
caveat. If the Surname Report could be printed as a chapter in
Publishing Center with options like...

1> Print only tagged surnames
2> Print surnames with notes
3> Print surnames with pictures (see my question below)

... then I think it might be useful to me. But I would still like to
hear other ideas.

By the way Geoff, why is there a Picture icon on the Master Surname List
window? I can't seem to get it to do anything. But, if you could also
attach a picture to a surname (for example, a map of the region in West
Prussia where my Kowallek ancestors came from) and print it on the
Master Surname Report, then that would be pretty neat!
