The "last residence" is where the benefit checks were mailed. Jan is
right - if they use zip code as the basis, that could have changed.
I see many cases where people use the "last residence" as the death
location. Even though my father lived in Maryland, he died in South
Carolina while on a trip. So you would never find a death certificate in
Maryland!

Jon,
Here is some more oddities. My son was born and lived in California. Never
set foot in Michigan yet his SS first 3 digits are Michigan 374
The town, state in the SS Death Index is not necessarily where the person
died. Rochester, Oakland County, Michigan had their ZIP code changed. The
people that had last residence in Rochester now have last residence in St
Clair County Michigan.
Residence at time of death (this is really the address of record, but not
necessarily where they lived or died). My father in law that died in
Merced County California has the last residence Pierce County, Washington.
He never ever was in the state of Washington. They used our address as my
husband was his father's conservator.

Robert,
Here is a link that discusses the SSN system:
http://www.usrecordsearch.com/ssn.htm
Note that you can order a booklet from the SSA that gives more detail.
However, where a SSN was issued does not necessarily reveal where a
person was
born or lived. For example, I was born in North Dakota, live in
Minnesota and
my SSN was issued in ND! In other words, the SSN will only tell you
where
the card was issued, not where the person was born or lived.
Additionally, the "last residence" on the SSDI only reports the last
residence of the deceased, not where the person died. For example,
someone living
in Moorhead, Minnesota might have died across the river in Fargo, North
Dakota. So we must be careful in drawing conclusions from the SSDI.
