Robert, Here is a link that discusses the SSN system: http://www.usrecordsearch.com/ssn.htm
Note that you can order a booklet from the SSA that gives more detail. However, where a SSN was issued does not necessarily reveal where a person was born or lived. For example, I was born in North Dakota, live in Minnesota and my SSN was issued in ND! In other words, the SSN will only tell you where the card was issued, not where the person was born or lived. Additionally, the "last residence" on the SSDI only reports the last residence of the deceased, not where the person died. For example, someone living in Moorhead, Minnesota might have died across the river in Fargo, North Dakota. So we must be careful in drawing conclusions from the SSDI.
