In my experience, this is so very true.  You can't really know what you 
want until you have tried using it to do real work.   That will help refine 
and change your ideas pretty quickly (it's sometimes called "dogfooding", 
for "eating your own dog food").   OTOH, you have to have some conceptual 
framework to make a start.

In the case of the zettelkasten, the originator of the system wrote that it 
will take maybe two years to get enough material into the system for it to 
start to make its benefits obvious.  Another practitioner wrote about 
having it become helpful in a few months.  So we can't expect to arrive at 
a good system by quickly hacking away for a little while.  It's going to 
take a real investment of time working with it and changing things.  That's 
not a bad thing, but it is reality.
