I initially shared those thoughts, but on reflection I do not buy into that argument at all. If Cross-lfs were ever to become the mainstream build then the early development of it needs to be part of the information trail.
I know I've been quiet on the subject but I just wanted to get my two cents worth in it as well. I agree with the argument Greg made with regards to the information trail. IRC has some good benefits in kicking back and forth ideas without having to wait for emails to be sent out over the mailinglists back and forth. It allows for easier real-time development and debugging. I agree with everybody else here that it should not, however, replace the mailinglists/newsgroup more formal structures.
IRC logs could be made available. In an effort to cut out the social chit-chat that goes on as welll, perhaps these development talks should take place on its own channel whose logs are posted on the website and are searchable through search engines like Google and of the search engine on the LFS website.
IRC is also a lot less formal which makes me wonder about the format in which such discussions are made available. When we post to mailinglists we generally try to at least be concise and clear. On a live medium such as IRC that's obviously not the case. And maybe more importantly, it would create another place to look for information. On these lists everything is together one can easily find what you are looking for. If logs are brought into the mix, you have to figure out whether to check your email backlog, or your IRC backlog, to find what you need.
Summary posts here aren't good enough. It misses the important elements that leads up to a resolution, the error messages, the various ways to getting to a fix, the educational element of precisely that journey.
Making IRC logs available shouldn't be a technical issue. I'm sure the software can be told to log a certain channel to a file that's accesible via the website. I wonder as to how useful that really ends up being.
