I was just rereading my previous reply and noticed something i missed 
yesterday, it's not a UUID your root= parameter. But if i'm not mistaken the 
/dev/disk/by-id stuff is set up by udev which you wouldn't have when not using 
an initrd. I'd still try it without the root=parameter or try root=/dev/sda8
